Did You Know?
The name "Punta Cana" is related to the original name of the property owned by GRUPO PUNTACANA in the east of the country in 1969, "Punta Borrachón." Frank Rainieri soon realised this name would not sound attractive to tourists and business, and so he changed it to "Punta Cana," an area to the south of this property. This is what the first hotel was called: Punta Cana Club.
Travellers coming to Punta Cana and Bávaro are usually in search for peace and nice beaches. There are humble towns in the nearby area ¿and no cultural attractions.
Perhaps the only place worth seeing is Higüey, some 50km from Costa del Coco, featuring the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, the Patroness of the Dominican people.
